A little less than a year ago the four of us - Cassie, Charles, Emmaleigh and I - were on a mountaintop at sunset shivering from the 30 degree winds as we wrapped their engagement session. As they popped champagne for the camera (and at the camera!) we talked about what they wanted their wedding to look like and what they were planning for their Grove Park Inn brunch ceremony. Now, in October 2020, the world looks vastly different.

When Cassie and Charles cancelled their wedding back in the spring, concerned that COVID-19 wouldn’t allow for a safe and enjoyable wedding, Emmaleigh and I knew we wanted to do everything we could to ensure they still had a beautiful day together, even if it wasn’t what they originally planned. And boy were we rewarded; this was such a reminder that oftentimes things happen for a reason. As I write this on October 10th, the day they had originally planned to wed, it has been pouring nonstop all day long. But on Thursday, two days ago, Cassie and Charles got to read their vows to each other on a quiet hill under a vibrant sunset. And then the four of us shared an incredible cake and a bottle of champagne (purchased by sweet strangers!) by the fireplace after dark.

I have always been a huge proponent of the intimate wedding + separate celebration approach. It allows for my couples to truly spend their wedding day together, focused on each other, and then to focus on spending time with family and friends when the time comes, without having to feel rushed in either regard. Thursday allowed us to photograph slowly and intentionally, with a full two hours for portraits (something you never get on a big wedding day!) so that once it’s finally safe to celebrate, Cassie and Charles can really enjoy their time with family.
