Durham Bakery’s Online Ordering Menu Photos

The Photoshoot

This was an 8 hour photoshoot in the studio with two separate tables set up for photography. The aim was to photograph each of the 70+ different breads, pastries, and miscellaneous items - each styled to highlight their primary flavor(s) - for a cohesive, vibrant, and sophisticated online ordering menu customized for the Durham, NC bakeshop’s website. We began by photographing all breads - loaves, slices, pretzels, buns, etc. - on the rustic-styled backdrop using various wooden cutting boards, ceramic vases, dried flowers, and edible elements such as each bread’s central flavor of seeds, currants, or herbs. We then photographed some of the breads - primarily the various buns, scones, and other smaller items sold in multiples - on a simple white table with a bright window, gold furniture, and indoor greenery as the second and more modern backdrop to highlight the bakeshop’s modern take on traditional flavors. For the pastries, we photographed all fruit-forward desserts using their primary fruits as styling elements, along with various neutral-colored linens, metal cooling racks, and wooden dishes to tie in the simple natural styling used for the breads. Stand-alone cookies and pies were also photographed against brightly-colored seamless paper to highlight their bold flavors, using colors which coordinated with the more rustically-styled elements, to tie in both the restaurant’s use of traditional recipes and their emphasis on modern flavor twists. Finally, we photographed additional retail products, such as muffins and homemade granola, using linen-bound books to allude to the cafe-setting of the restaurant’s interior.

I delivered all photos via a downloadable online gallery so that anyone on the restaurant and bakeshop’s marketing team as well as their external web builder could access and download their photos. This downloadable gallery remains as a permanent point of storage in the event that the restaurant employs new design staff or loses their own data.

A sample gallery of the 70+ dishes photographed during this 8 hour in-studio food photoshoot. Each product was photographed against a minimum of two differently-styled backdrops. All photos were composed center-weighted for the online ordering page’s use of square cropped photos, as well as composed for standard 3x2 vertical or horizontal use in social media and brand imaging.
